Night florists in Rome are 'flower slaves', which may sound romantic, but as is often the case, reality is much more prosaic than imagination: the fact is that these shops have so much stuff that they can no longer close, except at the risk of suffocating all the plants overnight. So, not being able to have larger spaces, the only solution remains to stand watch. Most of the time, as is now the case with all the hardest jobs, it is non-EU nationals who do the night shift, some as second jobs, but all for very little pay.
